Hello Summer

I just love this time of year! I come out of my hibernation feeling refreshed, revitalised and ready for anything!

My spring and summer inspiration?? I took inspiration from Prada. I finally have a decent pair of Harem Pants, not quite Prada but Witchery will do fine. I also love the use of khaki, this colour will be making a strong appearance into my wardrobe this coming summer.

Khaki Pants

MAKEUP – Lipstick

Lipstick is making a come back.. Though I suppose it never left.. but forget pretty glossy pink lips, or a natural shine which we casually slap on before heading off to work or when meeting a friend for a drink. We’re talking about matte, bold strong lips.

I like emphasis on the lips, it allows you to play down the eyes. Which means a little more time in the morning before work (extra cupa coffee anyone?).

Bold Matte Lips

Have become the most essential part of a women’s face. Forget lash extensions or bone structure, its your eyebrows that balance the face and create drama. Smashbox have the best pencil for eyebrows, always look for a khaki-ish colour. Avoid a warm tone.

With the recent activities at Pretoria High School for Girls, I cannot imagine saying that these two  women have “unprofessional hair” and should relax it. They are beautiful, Viva South Africa. We must stand together and support one another.

I am always a fan of angular frames, they really “frame” a person’s face.

So I am on a mission to loose weight, yada yada yada.. You know how it goes. Though I have a plan, I want a new bikini. A fancy one, so I have put away some cash as an incentive, only once I loose the weight can I go buy my new cossie. I have my eye on a new Seafolly at Bryanston shops…. 🙂

Recently I had the opportunity to smell Parco Palladiano IV by Bottega Veneta. Its amazing when you smell a fragrance and the smell stays with you, like a memory. That is when I know I have found my next scent.

“Parco Palladiano IV is a warm, luscious vision of a Mediterranean garden at midday. With its bright, summery yellow hue, the fragrance features rich floral and fruity notes: a unique blend of azalea and chestnut that creates a velvety and deeply feminine fragrance. The glass bottle with silver cap is embossed with the intrecciato pattern and expertly hand-finished.”

Until next time..

Winter 2016

Winter has finally arrived.

Our last summer was one of the hottest, it has done our landscape no good and we’re mentally unprepared for the cold ahead! For the next few days we will be tortured, unfamiliar with such cold weather we won’t cope when having to leave our warm beds. We’re so pathetic!

Anyway, today’s blog we look for inspiration as we still have a couple months of cold to endure.

#Contouring #Makeup

Kim has perfected the contouring technique and possibly responsible for this craze.. Kim also uses the HD Makeup Forever Foundation. I below to the church of Makeup Forever.

Even though this foundation was initially designed for HD television, they have now reengineered this product, now designed for 4K television. What next…

BY THE WAY – 4K resolution, also called 4K, refers to a display device or content having horizontal resolution on the order of 4,000 pixels and vertical resolution on the order of 2000 pixels.[1] Several 4K resolutions exist in the fields of digital television and digital cinematography. By 2015, 4K television market share had increased greatly as prices fell dramatically during 2014[2] and 2015. By 2025, more than half of US households are expected to have a 4K-capable TV (2160p), which would be much faster than the adoption curve of FullHD (1080p).[3]

I absolutely love Emma Watson, a natural beauty that women can admire. I love her natural hair colour, her simple english dress sense and her gentle nature. Look how red lipstick can jazz up any women.

Lovely Old School Coats, find them at your local Charity Store.

Brogues, beautiful brogues! What a lovely shoe, every women should have a tan and black pair. When I was in Munich a few years ago. The ladies all wore Brogues, I was in love. Luckily our winter fashion have brought beautiful styles to our stores. My only advise, choose a pair that has a slightly pointy style. I have a short round pair and it makes my legs look fat. Bummer.

Louve by Serge Lutens

Perfume to warm the heart and soul. I recently bought a bottle of Louve from Metropolitain Cosmetics, I’m keeping this bottle for my wedding day (luckily next month as I really can’t wait any longer).

“Her tracks go back to time immemorial. She lives in the silence of a snow castle. Her name is Woman, Mother and She-Wolf. Her heart is a white almond.

It is all bitterness, a word that is magnificent and the fragrance even more so.
In choosing the white almond, that’s what I was aiming for.”
Serge Lutens

The Skinny on Organic Shampoos.

A few years ago I recieved a small sample of Africa Organics. A locally made and sulfate-free shampoo and with my many years of working at Metropolitain Cosmetics I also regularly used a French brand called Leonor Greyl. Also natural and sulfate-free. Leonor Greyl was so natural you could use their Honey Shampoo ‘Au Miel’ on your morning toast, YUM.

Illustration HP

We have all heard of this sulfate-free shampoo business but non of us really knows what it means. It’s like one of those moments when someone asks you if you heard the resent budget speech and you answer, “Ya ya, totally heard it on 702 this arvie.” Meanwhile you were sitting at Sorbet getting your gelish on, surfing your Instagram feed. (That wasn’t me by the way..)

As you all know I’m getting hitched in July, so what better thing to do during this exciting and festive time? Go on a diet! Yes total bummer, however I do enjoy a 32 jean pant so one must persevere! Back to the point, so my wonderful dietitian Carol (I mean that, she is wonderful. Except when I can’t eat toasted armies) sends me up the road to Hobart Center, to the Fruits and Roots in Bryanston. Low and behold is the shampoo sample I received all those years ago. Luckily now available in a 210ml tube and at R49,99. In my basket of banting mayo and Almond Nut Butter (don’t buy this nut butter it is deadly) I have my locally made and sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.

The Africa Organics Line

If there is a part you’re going to pay attention during this blog article, it’s now! Sodium Laureth Sulfate-free shampoo WILL NOT foam. Yes ladies, say good bye to thick foamy shampoos that strip all the natural oils on your scalp. These shampoos don’t foam and strip, they simply rinse perspiration, balance the scalp’s oils and restore scalp hygiene. As well as stimulate the blood circulation. Read further…

Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), an accepted contraction (Lauryl + Ether = Laureth) of sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), is an anionic detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products (soaps, shampoos, toothpaste etc.). SLES is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent.[1] SLES, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS), and sodium pareth sulfate are surfactants that are used in many cosmetic products for their cleaning and emulsifying properties. THEY BEHAVE SIMILARLY TO SOAP.

Why would one want want to wash their hair with an effective foaming agent???

I really do encourage you to go buy yourself your very own Africa Organics either tomorrow or on the weekend. Below I have step by step directions for washing with this unique shampoo and conditioner. This product won’t spread through your hair like conventional products, but the end result is great.

  • Rinse your hair, you simply want to dampen the hair. Not sopping wet.
  • Take the size of a five rand coin of shampoo and apply ONLY to the scalp. Massage. (this is where you will hate me and wonder why the shampoo feels like sticky goo against the scalp.
  • ADD water, massage, ADD water and massage, ADD more water and you will finally rinse the shampoo out. However you’ll feel there is still product against the scalp. Don’t despair!!
  • Round two, take another five rand coin size shampoo and apply to the scalp, you will find you will now have a beautiful emulsification and you can now wash the hair as per usual.
  • When you rinse the shampoo out, this shampoo will rinse through the ends so please, no need to add shampoo to the ends.
  • Now massage your conditioner through the hair. (If you have an oily scalp, only apply to the ends.)
  • Towel dry, and style as you would normally do.
Look how happy she is!

TA DA!!! Beautiful healthy hair. If you do have dry hair from dying/highlighting/straightening give the shampoo a few washes before you will feel the difference.

I chose the Marula Shampoo and Baobab Conditioner. The shampoo, is great for everyday use for normal or oily hair. It contains natural, biodegradable foaming agents that won’t strip your hair with the addition of Rooibos and Marula for anit-oxidants and to help prevent breakages. I chose the Baobab conditioner because I have dry and curly hair. Baobab fruit powder helps to condition your hair.

I would love to hear your options and own experiences, please leave your comments. Enjoy!!

My Turn!!

In January I said YES!!!

After many years of working in the wedding industry of hair and makeup.. I have stolen many an idea with my eyes. I have walked through decorated venues and wondered how they have managed to build a forest on the ceiling. I have made googly eyes at breathtakingly beautiful dresses. I have admired the beautiful stationary and thought behind it. I anticipate my clients photographs, wanting to see their love story. My favourite questions to ask the bride is, “Where did you and your Fiancé meet?” and “How did he propose?” I love hearing these stories and they are always different!

On January 24th, my now Fiancé rather casually suggested we do lazy sundowners at the Hyde Park Hotel. Our best spot for Frozen Margarita’s, Jozi sunsets, yummy food and good conversation. It was a Sunday, initially I thought great! However by the afternoon I was lazy on the couch and rather casually suggested.. we stay home. “No don’t be a lazy bum, lets go! So off I wandered to the bathroom, best I put some mascara on..

Luckily we found a spot overlooking the northern suburbs, Roger moved his chair next to mine. He snuck off to order our drinks and I simply admired the view. Before I knew it, our waitress arrived with a bottled of Moet and Roger was fiddling around in his jacket. He looked panicky.. He found what he was looking for and promptly moved down to his knee to propose. Apparently he didn’t get to ask me as I gave him a kiss before he could ask. The rest is history!

Its been three months, we have chosen a date, venue, band and photographer. All the big ones are done, know comes for the inspiration. Now we add colour, ambiance and life to our wedding. Roger and I love the Karoo, I think you will see the strong influence with the olive leaves, fynbos and gold tones.

We have chosen long tables, just love this vibe!

Countdown, main page

I am using a free APP called The Brides Office, its local and helping me with my planning. Also found some awesome wedding vendors through the APP!

One of my bridesmaids had pots of herbs on her table which were a part of the decor as well as gifts for the ladies. Yes we have stolen her idea… We’ll wrap each pot with hessian, calico or a terracotta pot to add texture.

We’re having a 15h00 ceremony, we don’t want guests to get hungry during photographs. So we’re cutting the cake after the ceremony, we have chosen a cheese cake. Rounds of beautiful Brie, Camembert, Gouda, Goats Cheese, served with Gluwein, preserves, breads and cold meats. (if guests don’t finish it, keep the rest for a late evening snack) My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

I am blessed with many friends. I have six bridesmaids, I could probably have more.. My friends are beautiful women with different personalities and styles. What better colour to suit a winter and earth theme, black. I am in love with this above image.

With a beautiful elegant black dress, I hope to dress it with a delicate silk scarf for each of my bridesmaids. The scarf will also keep their necks warm, though the gluwien will also help with that!

I won’t divulge into too much detail here regarding my dress, though the above image is a sneak peak…

The number one question I have received after my engagement? “Who’s doing your makeup?”

The day has come that I will get to do my makeup for my wedding day. I am so excited nonetheless!

Christiaan David Photography

Now engaged folk, doesn’t matter how you do it, find the money. Find the best photographer, there are so many talented photographers in South Africa. Their passion and inspiration will inspire you. I have known Christiaan since I started eleven years ago. He has a warm and welcoming personality, he also makes jokes which I like. Christiaan’s style is warm and unposed, with our winter theme we wanted Christiaan to capture that warmth. You spend a lot time with your photographer on your wedding day, choose one that you like!

Another thing that gets me excited? Music!! Live music, through one of my bridesmaids, I discovered The Motherland Band. They sing, they set up your sound and microphones for the speeches, Sean has also guided me with a schedule which has been a huge help. We are going to have a proper celebration!!

Tutorial #5 My Perfect Canvas and Smokey Eye

I host Workshops and One-on-One lessons regularly, the one question I am always asked? How to do a smokey eye. Honestly, with good product, brushes and practice. You’ll ace it no time.

I always begin any makeup with “Perfect Canvas” I first learnt of the term “Perfect Canvas” with Smashbox, however at my Makeup Forever days we always followed these steps.

Step #1 Primer – Smashbox Photofinisher Foundation primer

Smooth over the T-Zone and cheeks with large pores using your fingers. (I always use the green one, even if you don’t have redness)

Step #2 I use a “pea size” of Mat Velvet Foundation – Makeup Forever over the areas that need the most coverage. (Use sparklingly)

Use a foundation brush, with a dabbing motion spread your Mat Velvet.

Step #3 My secret weapon, Apply Face and Body Foundation – Makeup Forever over the face to soften the mat foundation and to add moisture and radiance to the skin.

Face and Body foundation is the best the market can offer! It’s gel texture softens wrinkles and enhances a person’s natural skin. Pat this foundation otherwise it will streak.

Step #4 Tidy the eyebrows with Smashbox Browtech – Taupe.

A badger hair (angled) brush is best to apply your shadow. Begin at the arch of the eyebrows.

Then fill in the rest, don’t over use the shadow. Rather apply too little and apply extra afterwards.

Step #5 Essence Eyebrow Gel from Clicks will tidy the eyebrow hairs and keep in place.

Step #6 Apply Stilla – Lillium (Woolworths) Convertible Lip and Cheek to the apples to brighten up the complexion. Natural blush is uplifting! (If they discontinued this product I may have to close my business down!!!!)

Use a concealer brush or finger tips.

You can apply bronzer to the cheek bones to enhance your bone structure. If you tend to get shiny simply dust over the face with Makeup forever HD powder to set and improve longevity.

I always say to clients, one can simply apply mascara and lip gloss and you’re ready to take over the world. I always encourage that you do Perfect Canvas as so little follows their after. I think Amanda looks amazing.

Eyeshadow –

Step #7 Apply a bone colour eyeshadow over the eyelid, using a large flat brush.

You want to absorb any moisture and remember you want to work with dry product on top of a dry surface.

Apply small amount of the base colour under the eye into the lashes.

Step #8 Apply Kohl line along the lash line, Makeup Forever makes a soft yet jet black kohl liner.

Smudge your liner with a small flat brush.

You can really blend the liner into the crease, an amazing product!!

Step #9 Smudge the kohl to the bottom of the lashes,

Blend the black with a dark brown eyeshadow.

Step #10 Using a bullet or dome brush, apply a medium brown eyeshadow to the crease of the eye. This will also soften the black. Be brave, take the brown close towards the eyebrows, this will elongate your eyes.

Step #11 Using your large flat brush, apply a shimmer highlighter to the brow bone to showoff this area.

Finish off with Mascara.

Step #12 Line the lips with Makeup Forever’s aqua lip liner, a dusty rose is best! This will prevent bleeding of your lipstick and prolong wear.

Step #13 Apply your lipstick over the liner. I used a mat lipstick to ensure it lasts.

Step #14 Finish off with a slick of gloss.

Love Amanda’s look, fresh yet sophisticated.

Find the Perfect Vendor for your Wedding Day

Beautiful bride sitting in car straight with mobile phone hairst

Planning your wedding day is fun! Yes there can be one or two moments when you will feel overwhelmed by the costs or family but the whole process is fun. Vendors play an important role in your wedding planning and you need to find one that fits your needs and personality. So how do you find a vendor? How do you find that perfect dressmaker? Hair Tutorial #4 Easy Up-Do

Is the hot weather and your hair keeping you hot and bothered? No worries ladies try my simple DIY up-do, once you practise a couple times you’ll find yourself doing this simple style more and more often.

Before you begin, do a quick blow dry through the fringe or front pieces to soft the hair that frames the face. If you have time to spare, curl the ends. Curly ends will be easier to work with and pin away with ease. Unless do this up-do on day two or three when the hair is due for a wash, simply spray in some volumising dry shampoo. I love the Batiste Dry Shampoos from Clicks!

Step #1 Section the hair around the crown of the head. You can let the fringe fall out, this will soften and frame the face.

Step #2 Teeze the crown and spray. I used a Keune Hair Spray to set.

Step #3 Gather the section and centre at the back of your head. You can push up to create more volume.

Step #4 Secure the section with two bobby pins, slid one bobby pin in. The other from the opposite sides to create a cross with the two pins.

Step #5 Take the first section, roll the curls into a bun and secure with two pins crossed over.

Continue to roll and fold your hair into a curl.

Then secure.

Step #6 Repeat with the second section of hair.

Image-77 Image-78

Step #7 Take your third section,

Twist the hair..

Fold into a curl..

Secure and cross pin.

Step #8 Repeat with your last section.

Secure any loose bits.

Spray and set your upstyle.

Instantly Ageless by Luminesce

Instantly Flawless

Tempted for your first botox shot? Already booked your appointment for your follow up botox shot? Well ladies I have come across a lovely little serum that lasts up to 10 hours, smooths fine lines and wrinkles, puffiness and deep wrinkles. In other words the good, the bad and the ugly of sun damage and premature ageing.

I believe in long term maintenance, I believe in clean eating, exercise and positive thinking is ultimately what keeps us young. However those long cycles and marathons can be taxing on ones complexion. So we need a little help along the way, even if it is a little quick fix. Now ladies a quick fix ain’t so bad, crash diets are bad! When using a serum to relax the muscles that are responsible for our expressions which ultimately cause those “smile lines” we’re preventing deep winkles from forming. You also soften fine lines and wrinkles. Without the risk of losing your own natural expression that makes ‘you’ you.

Back to this little miracle serum, Instantly Ageless contains an ingredient called Argireline: a peptide that works like botox—without the needles. Reviving the skin and minimising the appearance of fine lines and pores, hello flawless skin. The serum sports 8 ingredients, no preservatives, hence the sachet packaging.

How to use: with a patting motion, apply a thin layer to the targeted areas. Leave damp on skin and remain expressionless (may be difficult if you’re getting your kids ready for school) for 2–3 minutes while product dries to achieve results. One sachet should last 2-3 uses, no need to over use.

Visibly diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Erases the appearance of dark circles and puffiness under the eyes
Minimises the appearance of pores
Helps to even skin texture (great for the chest)
Mattes skin for a flawless finish (perfect for hot summers)
Restores skin to optimum appearance

Candi Inbox: #London

#StreetStyle #London

I decided to do a rather quick visit to London last week, arrived the Sunday morning back last week Friday. 5 days, crazy yes but totally worth it! Every time I am able to visit an overseas country I find I return with bright eyes, new ideas, a big smile and a generally happier me. I suppose holidays do have that effect on a person.

Back to London, the Sunday I spent a wonderful day in Cambridge. The rest I walked, tubed and bused around London Town with my better half who continues to prove he is my ultimate travelling partner (bonus) except when I just had to pop into the Ted Baker store (then there was a grumble and he would head off to the closest pub, which is normally two or three shops down) uninterrupted shopping time for me (bonus). I love fashion and below are a few of my favorite street styles.

Jersey dress, white takkies and a side braid.
The best color combo, denim + white + beige.
Soft turquoise on Oxford.

I found the English love their lipstick, everywhere I looked there was a stylish or hip women with bold lipstick. I wear my red lipstick but on special occasions. If you prefer eyes, partner some bold on the eyelid and you’re in business.

Shimmer gold on the eyelid.
Hair bun and red lips.

Braids really do add a bit of glam to a hair-do that could be pretty boring. Simple bun, but plait in a braid from the nape of the neck into the bun and we’re in business.  Plait small braids from the forehead into a glam pony tail. Love adding some spice to a quick do!

Louis Vuitton Series 3 VIP Launch - Arrivals - LFW SS16
Braids turn this simple pony tail into rock star!
Side braid to complete sexy curls.
Ruffled and tussled braid.

Being the beauty fiend that I am, I spent some time in the Space.NK stores as well as the Boots stores. I love all the bits and bobs one can find. I can get lost in a Diskem or Metropolitain Cosmetic store! I found the Soap and Glory products. I am always on the bum mission to treating “Cellulitis” and keeping my bottom in mint condition! S&G make a ‘Firmanator’ gotta love the name! This cream is a special bikini body firming formula and is specifically for orange peel. Now ladies I know diet is the best route to keeping one’s derriere firm and smooth, though with age and wine one must be extra cautious with one’s bottom!!

So very quickly, The Firminator uses D-Puff-7D Energinseng-VC and ElasticBoost-B with peppermint and Litsea Cubeba tonning oils. I have the feeling they may have made up those names up to sound fancy, perhaps I should have spent my 10 pound on something else…. though I am a sucker so lets move on.. Remember squats + Firmanator = awesome bottom!!!

The Firmanator….

Product #2 if I haven’t last all credibility with the last product, hear me out! ‘No Clogs Allowed’ is amazing!! This deep pore detox mask is self heating, gentle and contains kaolin to extract and acids to clear. Boom, skin exfoliated and looking radiant. I’m addicted.

A mask to rule them all!

Gotta love being a women!

Hair Tutorial #3 The Sock Bun

I have always loved the sleek and elegant look of a bun. Some of us have the length to pull off a bun however we need volume. A sock bun is my solution to this elegant and easy to do look. If you missed our last tutorial on curling, read it here! With the warm summer weather, a quick undo is a great solution to keeping cool.

Step #1 Take a sock and cotton wool. The thicker the sock, the larger the bun and remember to use a sock that is a similar colour to your hair colour. Stuff your sock with your cotton wool, and shape your sock into a donut. Your opening will then close around the toe area of your sock. You can purchase a donut from hair salons or China Mall, though we all have spare socks and cotton wall around the house.

Step #2 Brush out your hair and secure into a ponytail with an elastic band. Remember, higher the ponytail placement, higher the bun will be. You have the option to smooth out the hair, creating a sleeker ponytail for a more elegant bun. Or allow a few wispy pieces to fall loose, for a less kept and playful bun.

Step #3 Take the sock you rolled and pull the hair from the ponytail through the center of the doughnut. Spread the hair around the doughnut and fan out evenly from the centre, covering the sock donut.

Step #4 Secure each section with a pin to hold the hair.

Step #5 the remaining hair will depend on your length and thickness. Take sections and roll the hair inwards and then wrap around the bun and secure with pins.

Step #6 Roll and pin. Roll and pin. Repeat with sections.

A soft and elegant look done in minutes.
